Education and Research GAIAS sees the archipelago as an opportunity for conservation, and education and research as the key tools to achieve long-term goals. For over a decade, USFQ has been organizing workshops and courses in the Galapagos, bringing together scholars who have extensive experience working in the Islands. Gunther Reck, Ph.D. (Founder-Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences of USFQ, and former Director of the Charles Darwin Station); Carlos Valle, Ph.D., (USFQ Professor and former Director of WWF for Ecuador); and Hugo Valdebenito, Ph.D. (Botanist at the Charles Darwin Research Station), are part of the GAIAS faculty.
