Call for Papers

Moritz Thomsen was a writer from America but of the Americas more broadly. He has been placed alongside such noted American travel writers as Paul Theroux and Tom Miller. At the same time, his acute preoccupation with marginal groups and landscapes in Ecuador approximates his works to Ecuadorian social realist fiction. Writing as an expatriate author, Thomsen took up issues of national identity and exclusion, race and racism, rural ecology and development, and poverty. He did so in a deeply personal autobiographical form, which he also used in his books on his troubled relationship with his father and his participation in WWII. In his accounts of South America, Thomsen expresses empathy for the others he lived among for so many years, yet must deal with his own outsider status.

The editors of LiberArte seek papers to be presented at an international conference on Moritz Thomsen to be held in May in Quito, Ecuador. Presentations can be on any topic related to the life and works of Moritz Thomsen. Please submit abstracts (maximum 250 words) to vegamart@gmail.com.

Located along the Andean range in the north of Ecuador, Quito is the political center of the country and a vibrant cultural hub. The Historic Center of Quito, which retains much of its original colonial architecture, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.  

Coming from the U.S.:

The Mariscal Sucre international airport is located in the north of Quito. Direct flights are possible from several U.S. cities, including Houston, Atlanta and Miami.
