Psychologist Available:

The USFQ Psychology Department wants to inform the international students that they have a new psychologist who is currently completing her practicum hours here at USFQ as a requirement for her Ph.D. She speaks both English and Spanish fluently.  Her name is Rocio Naranjo, and she will be seeing students (for free, of course) on Mondays from 2:00-7:00 in the evening in D208. She can be reached via email at rocio_naranjo55[@]hotmail.com. She is available to counsel students immediately.

Message from U.S. Embassy

From the U.S. Embassy's Citizen Services office.

Regarding voting:  See also www.fvap.gov

This is the web site for voting information.

On the left side are links to specific state requirements, as well as the link to send in the absentee voter card.

Please advertise this as you can, among the US students.

Registering Your Visa & New Address for the "Dirección de Extranjería":
You register your visa first, and then go get your "censo" (i.d. card).  Don't think you have to have the censo first – it's the other way around.

Effective September 20th 2007 the Dirección de Extranjería has a new location:

San Ignacio 207 y San Xavier (sector Plaza Artigas)

DON'T LET A "TRAMITADOR" HELP YOU WITH THIS.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR PASSPORT TO SOMEONE TO HELP REGISTER YOUR VISA.  You will need to leave your passport overnight (or for a few days, even), but only do this with an authorized immigration official in the Direccion de Extranjeria Office.

For the Censo the address is the same - Amazonas y RepÚblica, frente al mall el Jardín.

If you haven't, yet, please…

We need a copy of the photo page of your passport.  This is for security purposes.

We need your signed student agreement

Turn in your "Diners" Student ID application.

Lounging in Halls

The university is trying to discourage sitting on the floors in the hallways of the university; it doesn't look good.  The steps, however, are fair game.  If you want to hang out and visit, please go to the pond, the courtyard in the back of the university, the front entrance of the university, etc.

Security

Personal security is a serious issue, and we've already had our first cases of robbery assault among you.  Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but there were slight injuries.  The first line of defense is to not put your self in dangerous situations, and to have 360 degree radar.  Still, sometimes a normal situation can turn dangerous. If this happens to you, remember that PERSONAL HARM CAN BE AVOIDED IF YOU DON'T RESIST.

Vonage Phone Working

The Voice Over I.P. ("VOIP") telephone in now functioning in my office.  As I've mentioned before, this is an internet-based telephone with a Florida number. In emergencies, we can place outgoing, or receive incoming, calls here.  This is a service to our international students and there is no cost. That number is (305) 395-3776.  Feel free to give this number to your families – but emphasize the emergency only condition, please.  Unfortunately, this will only be answered during normal office hours.

----------------------------------------

Why so many cops? USFQ has an agreement with the Ecuadorian police, and their classes are in the building behind the OIP.  Be careful not to be lured into a false sense of security around them just because they are wearing police uniforms.

Bluegrass / Folk Band "Deeper South" is looking for a fiddler!  Also, get invited to their shows.  Band's website.   Contact Cornell.

El semestre pasado los hicimos y tuvimos buenos resultados.  Además tendremos una pequeña fiesta de integracion la semana próxima [primera semana de septiembre].
