Contactos de Emergencias / Emergency Contact Information
If you find yourself in an emergency situation, immediately contact the Director or Assistant Director and/or your Resident Coordinator.
The OIP has a Vonage Voice Over I.P. ("VOIP") telephone number. VOIP is an internet-based phone that you use just like a normal phone in the U.S. In this case, we have a Florida number registered. This phone is located in the OIP Director’s office. You can place outgoing, or receive incoming, calls here – in an emergency only. This is a service to our international students and there is no cost. That number is (305) 395-3776.
Here are the dialing instructions:
Dial the Country Code: 593
Dial the city code: (2) is the Quito city code. (9) is the cell phone code.
Dial the seven digit number.
Example of full dialing from the U.S.: 011 [593] (2) xxx-xxxx.
In an emergency, your family can also easily call an Ecuadorian phone number (use the numbers on Office page). You could also call the U.S. Embassy, but there are 20,000 Americans in Ecuador, so the OIP is MUCH more likely to be able to help you (and the U.S. Embassy will probably just call the OIP).
Volcano Update
(Last Updated / Actualizado: 17 February, 2007)
Tungarahua Volcano erupted violently in mid-August 2006.
Tungarahua is located in central Ecuador, and ash has mostly gone to the South. Our Riobamba Campus was, however, affected by ash, but clean-up has restored things back to normal. Quito and Cumbaya were not affected.
Travel to this area -- Baños and surrounding areas, which is a few hundred kilometers south of Quito -- is not advised until further notice. Travel to Baños was impossible for days following the eruption, as roads were covered with pyroclastic material / lava. The roads are now open, but you are still advised not to go.
