President emeritus and professor emeritus of classics and history at Cornell University. He served as the university’s president from 1995 to 2003, and his presidency was noted for his commitment to need-blind admissions, focus on under graduate academics and campus life, and new initiatives for the life sciences and genomics as well as support for the humanities. He also served twice as interim president of Cor¬nell, first in 2005 - 2006 and then in 2016 - 2017. Prior to his second interim term, he was president of the Association of American Universities for five years, a role in which he was a national spokesperson for higher education.
