Professional Profile

Since 2013, Ana María Garzón has been an art historian and professor at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ). Holding an M.A. in Contemporary Art from Sotheby's Institute of Art, New York, she is currently engaged in a Ph.D. program in Art History and Theory at the University of Essex, focusing her research on modern art in Latin America between 1950 and 1970. In addition to her academic roles, Garzón serves as the director of the academic journal post(s) and co-director of Arte + Activismos, a dynamic laboratory exploring critical pedagogies and human rights within the realm of art. As a key editor of Estado Fósil, a noteworthy editorial venture investigating 50 years of oil exploitation in the Ecuadorian Amazonia, she has also showcased her curatorial expertise through contemporary art exhibitions in Ecuador since 2013. Garzón's scholarly pursuits have garnered support from esteemed institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Getty Foundation, highlighting her influential contributions that transcend academia, significantly shaping the cultural landscape.
