María José Pozo obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biological Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, a Master's degree in Biotechnology and Genomics from Rutgers University (United States). Currently, she is a full-time professor in the Biotechnology Department at Universidad San Francisco deQuito, Ecuador. She is a part of the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory. Her research interests focus on the molecular study of animals and plants, with a primary emphasis on genomics and genetic diversity of organisms such as the Andean bear, the Galapagos carpenter bee, rays, geckos, among others. She is involved in a community outreach project aimed at reducing conflicts between wildlife and humans by identifying the predator through molecular methods. She is currently participating in a project that aims to identify new variants in human genetic diseases.
