José Suarez is the director of the Division of Climate and Environmental Health at the University of California, San Diego. A medical graduate from USFQ in 2003, he later obtained his master's and doctoral degrees in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.
His research focuses on environmental determinants of health in vulnerable populations, particularly through the ESPINA study in Ecuador, which assesses the impacts of pesticide exposure from childhood to adulthood.
He collaborates on rural health surveys in Ecuador, leads a trial on the excretion of persistent organic pollutants in older adults, and develops engineering solutions for climate resilience. Additionally, he is a member of the Scientific Guidance Panel for California's Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program.
