Professional Profile

Gonzalo Rivas-Torres is a plant ecologist. He obtained his PhD in Ecology and Wildlife Conservation from the University of Florida (USA). He also holds a Master's degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis (USA) and a BSc from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador. At Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador) he is a full-time professor and researcher. In 2021, he was elected Director of the Tiputini Biodiversity Station. He is interested in understanding the impact of biotic and abiotic variables on plant communities in tropical and high Andean forests of Ecuador. Since 2001 he has been researching tropical ecosystems, with special interest in the Amazon region and Galapagos. His projects aim to map existing diversity using state-of-the-art technologies and remote sensors and to understand in the short and long term how climate variation at different spatial and temporal scales affects plant communities.
