II Simposio Ecuatoriano del Maíz

Corn is the primary cash crop in Ecuador. It serves as a staple in the diets of a significant portion of the population and is deeply intertwined with local customs and traditions. Moreover, it offers an economically viable production alternative due to its myriad of uses, especially in the food and animal feed industries.
In recent years, the production of hard yellow corn, predominantly cultivated on the Coast, has seen substantial increases in average yields. This improvement can be attributed, among other factors, to innovations in the use of certified seeds, crop nutrition techniques, irrigation, value chains, and more. However, there are other types of corn cultivated in the Sierra region that have not experienced significant yield increments. Their value chains are in the early stages of development. In both cases, it is essential to continue research and development of technologies that enhance yields, reduce production costs, ensure quality through sustainable intensification of production, and promote good agricultural practices.
Ecuador hosts institutions dedicated to corn-related research and technology development. Creating platforms for exchanging experiences and knowledge among various national and international institutions and organizations is crucial. This collaboration can propose technological solutions to challenges that hamper the productivity of this vital crop.
