Students who do not reside in the Galapagos Islands

USFQ students of any degree program, who do not reside in Galapagos (those who take classes at our Cumbayá campus), may take classes at our campus in the Galapagos Islands. The academic structure of the courses offered at USFQ Galapagos is based on three-week intensive modules (45 contact hours), the same number of contact hours that a non-intensive course has on the Cumbayá campus.

The USFQ Galapagos extension offers in-person courses both in its programs for resident students (courses in Spanish) and in programs for international students (courses in English). In resident student programs, courses are taught by the same professors who offer classes on the USFQ Cumbayá campus. In international student programs, courses are taught both by professors who offer classes on the Cumbayá campus and by other professors who only teach in the Galapagos. All have fourth-level academic degrees, mostly Ph.D. (doctorate).

USFQ non-Galapagos students who wish to take courses on the USFQ Galapagos campus must follow the following procedures in order to register:

 

Biology students

Biology students who take courses at USFQ Galapagos:

Should contact Gabriela Álvarez, academic assistant of the College of Biological and Environmental Sciences COCIBA-USFQ, who will verify compliance with the prerequisites they must meet to take the courses in Galapagos and give them all the information they require to plan their studies. It is important to highlight that all the costs of transportation, food, and stay are the responsibility and organization of the student.

Application dates:
Until March 20, to take classes the 1st semester (August-December)
Until October 10, to take classes the 2nd semester (January-May)

Students of the Biology program, concentration in Marine Ecology, must take the following courses at the USFQ Galapagos:

  • BIO 0327E - Marine Life (+ exercises)
  • ECL 0324E - Marine Ecosystem-Based Management (+ field practices)
  • ECL 0396E - Marine Ecology (+ laboratory)
  • ECL 0335 - Techniques of Marine Research (+ exercises)
  • ECL 0336 - Field Practices of Marine Research

These courses are taught as part of the USFQ Galapagos international program and are taught in English. To take them, students must have passed as prerequisites: all General College English courses (ESL code), the ENG 0100 Composition and Rhetoric course, and the BIO 0305 Invertebrate Zoology and ECL 0311 Marine Ecology and Oceanography.

Students from the other concentrations of the Biology program can also take courses at the USFQ Galapagos, being able to choose the courses listed above or any course available on the academic tracks of the USFQ Galapagos international program: Click here for more information. All courses are taught in English and to take them, students must have passed as prerequisites: all General College English courses (ESL code), the ENG 0100 Composition and Rhetoric course, and any specialization course that is pre-requisite.

Students from other USFQ majors who wish to take classes at USFQ Galapagos:

Should contact Daniela Proaño, academic coordinator of the USFQ Galapagos extension. She will verify the availability of spots in the courses of interest and will give them all the information they need to plan their studies at the USFQ Galapagos. It is important to highlight that all the costs of transportation, food, and stay are the responsibility and organization of the student.
