Host information
Universidad San Francisco de Quito has the only university extension located in the Galapagos Islands, specifically on the island of San Cristóbal. This is an initiative of the University in conjunction with the Decentralized Autonomous Government of the San Cristóbal Canton that came to light in 2002, as a unique opportunity for higher university education at the service of the habitants, as well as for research, conservation and development of the wonderful archipelago that Ecuador has. In addition, it maintains relations and agreements with several universities and national and international organizations for the conservation of the islands, which are home to one of the most diverse, rich and endemic flora and fauna on the planet.

The university campus is located on San Cristóbal Island, in front of Mann Beach, and has adequate infrastructure for teaching: fully equipped classrooms, an auditorium, research laboratories, wireless internet, a library, and common rooms such as a cafeteria and terraces. Among the agreements supported by the extension, the alliance with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) Bremen, The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and with the Parque Nacional Galápagos Ecuador (PNG).
About the Galapagos Islands – San Cristobal
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, in San Cristóbal, is the capital of the Galapagos province. It is home to many government offices, the Ecuadorian Navy, and the main offices of the Charles Darwin Center. It has an airport with daily flights to the mainland, as well as small charter flights for transfers between islands (Baltra and Isabela). It has approximately 5,400 habitants, making it home to the second largest human population in the Galapagos, after Santa Cruz. Most of the habitants make a living from government, tourism, and artisanal fishing. The PNG Interpretation Center is located near the town and provides an excellent source of information for the local community and visitors. Tourism, in fact, is the mainstay of the economy of the inhabitants, and this island has paradisiacal places where visitors will not cease to be amazed by the charm of its biodiversity, its landscapes and its people.
San Cristóbal Island encompasses a wide spectrum of natural habitats in the Galapagos. It is the wettest and most fertile of the islands, with a freshwater lake and lush green highlands. The higher ground is covered in lush forest and dense bush and scrub, the perfect habitat for the Galapagos giant tortoise. Some of this habitat has been converted to organic farmland to feed the local population. Meanwhile, along the coastal region, the habitat of San Cristóbal becomes coral beach, mangrove swamps, cactus forests and arid scrub. The climate in San Cristóbal, Galápagos is the same as in other parts of the archipelago, with the hottest months being between January-May and the coolest season between July-October. The highest season to visit Galapagos is from May to August.
