Apprenticeship and Service Program (PASEC)

The learning and service program aims to have students combine the acquisition of theoretical knowledge with reflection during their service activities in the community.

Through this program, USFQ will create a link between the theory and the reality of Ecuador so that students acquire an enriching experience that is replicated in their personal and professional life.

Through readings, reflections and various activities in a blended course, students will be able to know the reality of their country, reflect, develop leadership attitudes, civic awareness, tolerance and respect by creating connections with their service activities.

Testimonials

Testimonials from our graduates

"The problems I had, such as tests, homework, etc., were left behind once I arrived at the nursery. The children's joy was contagious, their laughter, cleverness, and mischief are good therapy to put stress aside. I realized that if I couldn't solve something the world would not end and that I should stop giving so much importance to problems."

- Juan Ignacio López Vaca

"A change in the social reality of the country begins with the actions carried out by oneself."

- Paulina Endara

"Helping the community has been an enriching experience for my personal and professional life, since you 'open your eyes' to a latent reality that is around you. You realize that small actions can actively contribute to the development of the population vulnerable in the country and encourages you to help even more in the future, either through new volunteers or the creation of Social Responsibility projects that have a long-term scope."

- Paulina Endara

"One of the experiences I had during my internship was when we played card games. We almost always played 40, which everyone enjoyed and brought back fond memories. It was very emotional to see that despite the diseases they face, in a simple game they can put all that aside and enjoy the moment. With that I learned that we should always value life, since with small details many people become very happy."

- Jonathan Nagao

"This semester I finally took the internship with the PASEC community. It had been a class that I deferred as much as possible during my university life, now I regret it. But more than regret, of the few hours I could spend with people from my foundation, I have had a great life experience. The service hours were done in a school, but not a conventional school, it only operates on Saturdays and it is dedicated to helping adults finish their high school studies. I had the opportunity to attend the graduation of the third class of students from this school and as one of the attendees said in his speech: 'I have never attended such an emotional graduation.' Seeing that adults still care about their basic education and understand that their studies are an opportunity development was quite motivating. At the end of this experience, everyone talks about their foundations as their own and the truth is that this is how I feel about the school. Now I am part of that community of teachers and students, but for me they are friends from whom I learned much more than I could teach them."

- Marcelo Ayala

"Working with the community is truly enriching and even more so if it is done with low-income children. I did my hours of service at the Fundación Solidaridad y Acción (ASA), located in Carcelén in a homework center directed at children. At first, as in everything, I was a little nervous, but actually working closely with the people from your country who need you was wonderful. After a few days of work the children remembered my name and were very loving, so I quickly felt at ease managed to help them with my knowledge in homework and with my joy for games, we had a lot of fun and we learned together. The experience was very good: I learned to be more patient and to share with them and to be detached from things, because they shared what little they had with you. I observed harsh realities in the children and thanked God and life for the opportunities I have and for the comforts that I did not value before. Doing community work is a great opportunity, so I recommend that you always go to work happy and ready, because there are people who need you."

- Verónica Yumiceba

Comments from our professors

"Learning and Service have been a great challenge and a refreshing experience as a professor during this time. I have witnessed the radical transformations of human beings. On one hand, I have noticed the security of my students by being aware of the quality of the studies they receive and feeling the breadth of understanding of the world that Liberal Arts has given them at this time. They discover that they see the world in a unique way, thanks to the tools they have. On the other hand, these free men and women, through service hours, understand the reality of their country, know their people and their needs; they take on their environment as their own, and with entrepreneurship and innovation they feel capable of being agents of a radical change in the structures of poverty and dependency that have been woven into Ecuador. Learning and Service is like a glimpse of hope for those who believe that a better country can be built, because they have already done it with their own hands."
