Description

The Master of Public Health, with a focus on Maternal and Child Health and Family, aims to strengthen the comprehensive health and well-being of women, children, and their families. Its methodology, centered on social determinants, systemic approaches, and community engagement, will enable our graduates to contribute to improving the quality of life for these population groups, thereby fostering the development of a more equitable and socially just society. 

The program integrates rights-based approaches, equity, social justice, and interculturality for the design, analysis, and development of policies, programs, and interventions aimed at achieving universal coverage in maternal and child health with diverse populations and population groups, especially those in situations of social vulnerability.

Applicant Profile

Applicants for the Master of Public Health with a focus on Maternal and Child Health and Family should hold a bachelor's degree in health-related fields such as Medicine, Nursing, Obstetrics, Nutrition, Dietetics, Early Childhood Stimulation in Health, Public Health, and Health Promotion. They should be professionals passionate about population-level work for the health and well-being of women, pregnant and lactating mothers, infants, children, parents, and families; with a strong sense of social commitment, especially towards the development of strategies with vulnerable populations. They should have an open attitude towards interdisciplinary and teamwork, be flexible, open to new approaches, and demonstrate creativity and curiosity to thoroughly investigate and understand the causes of health-disease processes affecting these population groups. Additionally, they should possess leadership and organizational skills to propose and guide processes, projects, and programs in the field of maternal, child, and family health. 

Professional experience of at least one year in fields related to Public Health will be valued, as well as proven practice in working with collectives and population groups, both nationally and internationally.

  • The program's faculty have extensive experience in the development of population interventions and research in maternal and child health topics. They have led complex research projects such as the SEMILLA birth cohort study in Ecuador. They have extensive experience in the area of child health and nutrition, and have developed the first photographic atlas of food portions for the child population. Additionally, they have professional connections with a varied and extensive network of strategic actors at the national level and in the field with whom they have been implementing community engagement projects aimed at strengthening maternal and child health in socially vulnerable population groups.
  • In recent years, the Master of Public Health program has been positioning itself in the field of maternal and child health in the country, promoting links between research, decision-making, and public policy through the organization of important academic events at the national level on topics such as malnutrition, child development, and health promotion. These topics have been addressed through academic collaborations with international speakers, with whom the program has relationships. Among these collaborations, the State University of Colorado and the University of Michigan in the United States stand out.

If any requirement is missing, the applicant will not be able to participate in the process:

  • Confirmation of payment made through the system (screenshot) and completed application request, with signature and photograph of the applicant (review process in Postgraduate Admissions).
  • Bachelor's degree, issued by an accredited university in the country and registered with SENESCYT in the fields of: Medicine, Nursing, Obstetrics, Nutrition, Dietetics, Early Childhood Stimulation in Health, Public Health, Health Promotion. In special cases, professionals from other fields who demonstrate aptitude, professional experience, and fundamental knowledge in the program's field of study will be accepted.
  • Printed SENESCYT degree registration. If they are third or fourth level degrees, if applicable, obtained abroad, the applicant must first register them with SENESCYT.
  • Knowledge of the English language, equivalent to at least level A2 of the Common European Framework (determined by the USFQ English placement exam or by a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge certificate. Certificates must not exceed two years from the date of application).
  • Official transcript of grades.
  • Degree certificate with grade (except for USFQ Alumni and foreign universities).
  • Copy of identity card or passport.

Scholarships

According to the Postgraduate Scholarship Instructions, the equivalent of two scholarships of 15% each will be awarded for each cohort. Students who may apply for the scholarship after completing the first semester and demonstrating academic excellence are those who achieve a GPA equal to or greater than 3.8/4.00.
