Juan Sebastián Proaño earned his Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Ecuador. He furthered his education in the United States, obtaining a Master's in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Biorenewable Resources, both from Iowa State University.

Dr. Proaño serves as the Sustainability Coordinator at the University San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. Alongside his administrative role, he is a dedicated researcher and professor in the Mechanical Engineering program. His expertise lies in biomass conversion for energy, fuels, and chemicals. His research interests encompass sustainability, biochar production and applications, energy management systems, renewable energy resources, and organic waste valorization through pyrolysis.

His extensive career includes contributions to the design of unmanned aerial vehicles, airships, and fixed-wing aircraft, providing valuable insights to the Ecuadorian Air Force. Additionally, he co-founded Advanced Renewable Technology International Inc., a company committed to biochar production, emphasizing his dedication to sustainable solutions.
